Understanding PCOS
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a common hormonal disorder affecting women of reproductive age. It is characterised by irregular menstrual cycles, excess androgen levels and polycystic ovarian morphology on ultrasound. Early diagnosis and structured management can significantly improve symptoms and long-term health outcomes.
Common Symptoms
- Irregular or absent periods
- Excessive hair growth (hirsutism)
- Acne and oily skin
- Weight gain, particularly around the abdomen
- Difficulty conceiving
- Thinning hair on the scalp
Diagnostic Approach
Diagnosis involves hormonal blood tests (LH, FSH, testosterone, DHEAS, insulin, thyroid function), pelvic ultrasonography and assessment against the Rotterdam criteria. A thorough history helps differentiate PCOS from other causes of menstrual irregularity.
